7A Magazine Spread Content & Sketches

This project was easy but difficult for the following reasons: It was easier to design my sketches and determining where placement goes. I’m not professional but I’m learning so this empowers me to get creative. The reason way I felt it was hard was because I had to think about the story I wanted to write about, was in appropriate for a church magazine? I wanted to tell this story because it is personal, it’s my story. It is my spiritual experience returning to church after being inactive for 12 years. I was raised in the church and wanted to explain how faith works. I wanted to target the Ensign adult audience because I think that many can benefit from my story. My family faithfully continued to sow the mustard seed of faith in the gospel that was planted within me long ago. I had the experience that forever changed my life and put me back on the path of straight and narrow. I hope you enjoy my process and story. This is my process:

An eleven-year-old boy asked his aunt for help and guidance because he was feeling lost. He came from a broken home and was struggling being shuffled around between his parents. He felt that his aunt was a positive influence in his life because his parents were not. They were unavailable to him, preoccupied with their own lives and chaos each had. So, it’s easy to see why this young boy found refuge in his aunt.

His aunt was a single mother with two young children and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saint. She was raised in the church and continued in adulthood to be a faithful member. When she noticed that her nephew needed positivity in his life she saw the opportunity to begin speaking to him about the gospel. He was thrilled for the attention and care he received that he welcomed the missionaries to teach him. He began asking more and more about the Church and decided that he wanted to be baptized. This made his aunt very happy but she knew that she would need permission from his mother to do this. She went to his mother, her sister and asked her if it would be okay for her nephew to be baptized. Since his mother was not an active member of the Church and had no intentions to change her mind, she gave her sister a condition: If she asked him and it was what He wanted she would not stand in his way BUT, she didn’t want any part of that process. His aunt would oversee how to pick up her nephew and continue to teach this young boy without bothering his mother.

A mustard seed comes to mind, as you can see how His Aunt began to plant a mustard seed within this young boy and to sow His mothers, the boy’s grandmother had already planted long ago when both his mother and aunt were children. I recall this scripture, “It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree…” Luke 13:19 Their mother worked tirelessly to make sure that she did her part instilling the words of the Lord and his gospel of love. His aunt started with missionary dinners where they had lessons over dinner. He was baptized and his mother seeing his growth within the church decided to attend his baptism still refusing to water the mustard seed of faith planted inside if her.

Two years later, on a November morning after a night of party and reckless behavior at a Halloween party. A woman woke up groggy from consuming way too much alcohol. She is greeted by the morning sunrays penetrating her face and she quickly sit up and says, “I need to go to Church!” she is still dizzy, disoriented, and with her eyes barely open quickly changes and gets a ride to the only ward she knows. She arrives to the chapel and is confused because she realizes that she is in an English ward when all along she was raised in a Spanish ward. When she arrived, she felt the presence of the Holy Ghost so strong leading her into sacrament that had not yet started. She is overcome by the spirit and began to cry inconsolably.

The missionaries approached her and asked if they could help with anything. She explained that she woke up and felt compelled to come even though she had been out all night the previous night. She was an inactive member who had lost her way and was confused as to how and why she was there. She explained that she was a single mother of 2 boys. The missionaries then asked for advice because they had a young boy they were teaching and didn’t know how to approach the situation. The boy they were teaching wanted more than everything to have his mother change her life and better theirs by living the messages of the gospel. This woman wanting to help proceeded to ask about the boy and began seeing similarities to her oldest son. The missionaries proceeded to say “We don’t know how to approach David’s Mother or how to find her and her sister Samantha said she doesn’t want to see us.” In that moment, I looked to them and said I am Samantha’s sister and her nephew is my son, David!”

I realized that day that like a mustard seed, my seed of faith grew into something bigger than I could comprehend at the time. My family’s faith was so great that it prompted me to follow the Spirt into the Church and accept the message of the restored gospel on that sweet November day.

Sketch for 6A

This project really got into my head. Off the bat I knew what talk I wanted to use, because it is my favorite talk as of yet. Having the talk I wanted to use I had to decide what pictures I wanted to show because I wanted my message to be clear with a picture. I have difficulty with showing a weak and strong object so thought that if you see young and older it might give you a sense of what message I was trying to give and the same problem I had with showing a good sacrifice vs a bad one. Once I had all my pictures designing was a difficult because I am not comfortable but remembered that making it simple would go a long way. I used the colors from the 1st slide as the colors I would just through out the slides, and I achieved those colors with the eyedropper feature in PowerPoint.

Message- To remind others as well as myself that we are not forgotten by our Heavenly Father. The petals on the Forget-me-Not flowers are used a metaphor and stand for something that we should remember and that he wants us to know always.

Audience- Everyone, we all need a reminder from time to time that we are loved and cared for. Our Heavenly Father loves us and sends messages like these  so that we can feel his love when we need it the most.

Color Scheme: Split Complementary, Colors used were : Blue, Purple, and Gold.

Heather Simpson Hi Erika, I love your choice of talk. I remember it well.
I like the continuity of the blue/purple borders on each slide. It is very effective at tying it all together. On your 5th slide, titled “Sacrifices,” I would recommend choosing different pictures that don’t have to be edited so much. I found that the choppy lines from removing the background were distracting. The scale looks great, but the two others are a little uneven. Other than that one suggestion, I think it looks fantastic!

I took the recommendations of Sister Larson in changing the colors in my shapes with the eyedropper tool and used the same colors through out the slides. They originated from the flower garden in Slide 1. I also changed the placement of my text shapes as I didn’t want it to be distracting or create tension within my slide as Sister Larson suggested. I followed the directions she gave when fixing the baby but that’s how I think the image is a bit smutch in, I kept the format grabbed on the corner and dragged pressing ctrl so I hope that helps. Heather suggestion was to change the images inside of the scale but I couldn’t find another picture that got my point across like the ones I had so I didn’t change that.

I critiqued Heather Simpson and Megan Sue Sirrine Slide Design Project.

5A – Event Flier Project

5A Event Flier Project - Police kneeling5A Event Flier Screenshot

Message:

I wanted to shed more light on the tragedy that continues. All lives matter but with all the movements going on people are not seeing good police as protector but enemies and this is hurting our society. Killings are becoming normal and just in this past week 5 officers were killed in 4 days. I thought it was important to remind everyone that Police lives are important too and they have families as well.

Audience:

Everyone, because  we believe that  Police are still good. We may have  family members, spouse, friends, neighbors, or church members. It is for those who were taught that police is intended to protect and know right from wrong. I know that they have been getting a bad rap lately, but not all are bad, they took an oath “to protect and to serve” and most do just that everyday.

Color Scheme and Color Names

I used Monochromatic because law enforcement’s color is mostly blue. I used blues. Dark Blue for the page color, Blue lighter 60% for the text and blue for the website’s address. I added white because the colors they use are white and black so I used the White for the subtitle.

Kelly Coppin

Kelly Coppin Hi Erika! I really enjoy your flier idea and how you tied in the coloring and the poem. I have a couple suggestions and feel free to pick and choose what you think is actually helpful! I think all the text is a little overwhelming. I’m not able to easily pick up the information I need like the date, time, price, and what i’m really looking at the flier for. Is it an event or just remembering them? It also looks like the police officers head got cut off. I would try to find a way to simplify the overall design. It almost needs more “white space”. Also one other small thing is that there seems to be a lot of different text. The typewriter text is hard to read on the dark blue background because of how thin it is. I hope that helps!

Elizabeth McDonald Hi Erika! I love that you brought this current crisis to our homework assignment. Your timing is impeccable! As for a critique, I believe, Kelly is right on point with it feeling a bit overwhelming. This is an emotionally heavy topic, so it would beSee More

Pollyanna ReyesErika, I love what you have done. It is sad that we even have to have events like this for our policemen or for anyone. Like Kelly above, I think there is too much text. Condense it a little because it is too much to read for a flyer. I would also suggest putting the logos at the bottom and making them a little smaller. The policman’s head looks like it is cut off at the top. Maybe you can soften the edges a little using, Format – shape effects – soften edges. That might help. Good Job!
I critiqued Jesus Arredondo and Emily Ratcliff

I took the recommendations I was given, such as taking much of the text out. Giving more whitespace, trying to make it more cleaner. I used a hyperlink for the Policemen’s Prayer because Sister Larson advised I could add it because it was important but not pertinent to the flier itself. I changed font colors, and changed it to just one. I tried to fix the police officers head but it was very visible that it was cut off.

Mothers, Women who need empowering, Women who are empowered and can relate or really anyone who needs to remember who strong they really are.

To recognize how strong you are, we can do anything we set our minds to but more important we protect what is more important, whatever that may be.

I know that I wanted an animal so I went into images and found a picture of a Lion. I decided to use a Lioness because I could relate as I am a Leo. I did struggle to much picking my image because they were are large size and met the criteria for this project. Where I had trouble was getting my image full bleed since we were not able to just pull the image. Making no margins helped me make this image take the whole page (something that was not on our tutorials) but this took a couple of tries. Alignment I would have to say was the hardest for me because they had to go a specific way into the subject and not away, aligning to somewhere instead of just where it lands, that is very hard, its easier than it looks.

I used Serif and san Serif which I am still having trouble differencing from, but my font where Sitka Banner (48) for the title and Nirmala UI (11)

Heather Simpson Beautiful picture. I hope everything works out for your project. It sounds like you have had some difficulties.

Emily RatcliffHey Erika, what a pretty picture! I don’t know where you originally had your text, but I think it might be a good idea to place them either to the right or left of the lion to create balance. If you want them in the center, then maybe you could move the lion to the right or left. I hope everything works out! Ask Sister Larson if you need any help. She is so willing to help!
with this critique I fixed font styles and worked more on my alignment. I did make those changes because I it looked better once I applied the alignment and contrast to my fonts. Sister Larson and I went over to make to more pleasing to the eye and would help my picture better if I aligned and made two text boxes rather than one but I didn’t do that on this project.
